I. Worship Is A Priority Commandment Of God

David Jeremiah writes, It has been said that too many Christians worship their work, work at their play and play at their worship.

One does not have to read but the first four words of the Bible to realize that God is the beginning of all things, He is the Creator, and as such God is to have the preeminence in every part of our life. Lest there be any doubt in the minds of God’s people in the Old Testament, God clearly declared His position of prominence by declaring, I am the Lord thy God…Thou shalt have no other gods before me…Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image…Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them…Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain…Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy…Exodus 20:1-5a, 7-8

During the transition from the Old Testament to the New Testament and during the ministry and life of Christ, Jesus again emphasized the importance of worship and the prominence of God by saying, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord: And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. Mark 12:29-30

During the Church age, the dispensation of Grace, God’s position and His prominence has not changed and worship is no less important than it used to be. Our Lord is to be honored, praised and glorified with the same fervor, fear and focus as we see in the lives of others all through the scriptures. Paul preached to the Roman believers, I BESEECH you therefore brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service (Rom. 12:1). Paul also declared to the Corinthian believers, For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s (1 Cor. 6:20). He went on to further say, Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God (1 Cor. 10:31). In Philippians 2 Paul again continues to emphasize the importance of our present worship by telling us that every knee should bow and every tongue should confess and acknowledge the prominence and the position of God.

Worship is not an Old Testament thing. Worship is not an outdated or irrelevant thing. Worship is a command. Worship is a very relevant and important part of every believer’s life and relationship with God and for many it is a much-needed area of attention and Biblical instruction.
